FIXING A DRYER THAT WON’T START: A GUIDE
Laundry becomes a bigger problem when your dryer doesn’t turn on when you need it to. To get your cleaned garments folded and out of sight, use the following troubleshooting advice to find probable dryer issues.
STEP 1: CHECK THE “START” BUTTON
Make sure the “Start,” “Push to Start,” or “Hold to Start” button has been firmly pressed for around two to five seconds, depending on your model, before beginning a cycle to start troubleshooting a dryer that won’t come on. It’s possible that one push on the “Start” button won’t give the appliance enough time to start its engine.
Make sure the electronic touch controls are being utilized correctly if your dryer has a digital control panel. If your dryer’s “Start” button is on the control panel, make sure you push it firmly and dryly; otherwise, moisture or pressing with a fingernail may cause the panel to malfunction.
STEP 2: MAKE SURE THE POWER IS ON
Check to determine if there are any power outages, blown fuses, or tripped circuit breakers in your home if your dryer won’t turn on while seeming to be properly connected to a power source.
Check to see whether all fuses are secure and undamaged before commencing a dryer cycle. Remember to test your breakers by turning them off and back on as well. Consult a qualified electrician before continuing to troubleshoot the appliance if problems with fuses or circuit breakers continue after replacement or resetting.
STEP 3: INSPECT THE DRYER DOOR
If all power sources appear to be working properly but your dryer still won’t switch on, check to confirm that the door is shut all the way and securely latches. Depending on the model, your dryer may have one or two locks; nonetheless, for the dryer to work, all latches must be engaged. During loading, be sure that nothing gets trapped between the dryer’s body and the door.
STEP 4: SELECT THE CORRECT CYCLE OPTIONS
Check to see whether the proper cycle choices are selected if your dryer starts on but doesn’t start a heat cycle. Depending on the model, the dryer’s operation may be impacted by options like Automatic or Timed Dry cycles.
Consult your appliance’s owner’s handbook to learn model-specific features and options.
STEP 5: CHECK “CONTROLS LOCKED” INDICATORS
If your electric dryer won’t start, check to make sure the appliance controls haven’t been locked. Some dryer models may have a “Controls Locked” or “Child Lock” indicator to let you know whether this feature is active. If the “Controls Locked” status light is on, deactivate the function according to the instructions in the owner’s manual for your appliance.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY DRYER START SWITCH IS BAD?
If your electric dryer won’t start, check to make sure the appliance controls haven’t been locked. Some dryer models may have a “Controls Locked” or “Child Lock” indicator to let you know whether this feature is active. If the “Controls Locked” status light is on, deactivate the function according to the instructions in the owner’s manual for your appliance.
HOW DO YOU RESET A DRYER THAT WON’T START?
The “Reset” button on some dryer models may allow you to return the dryer to its default settings. Your “Reset” button can be situated with the other dryer settings on the control panel of an electric dryer. If your appliance includes a reset feature, see your owner’s handbook to find out how to use it.
WHY DOES MY DRYER TURN ON BUT NOT START?
If your dryer turns on but won’t start, the controls may not be operating as expected due to incorrect settings or user error. If your dryer won’t start but does turn on, ensure the following:
- The “Start” button and electric controls are pressed firmly
- The dryer door is firmly closed and latched
- Cycle-deactivation and timed/automatic cycle features are disabled
- The “Controls Locked” indicator is off
